During the retreat of the allied forces in the face of the Japanese attack, four RAAF squadrons passed through Sambawang.
These were No. 1 and No. 453 Squadrons, flying Brewster Buffalo fighter aircraft, and No. 1 and No. 8 General Reconnaissance Squadrons, flying Lockheed Hudson Bombers. Added on 19/08/2010
Home of 61 Signals Unit which was the last RAF Radar station in the Far East before moving to Seletar in 1959.
In addition to the RAF, RNAS Sembawang had a small detachment of Navy, and about 200 6th Co. RASQ. It would be one of the few stations to carry the three service flags at the same time on its flagpole.
