Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit Derriford (MDHU Derriford and sometimes called incorrectly MDHU Plymouth) was opened on the 12 April 1995 when the Royal Naval Hospital Plymouth closed. MDHUDerriford was first called the Royal Navy District Hospital Unit (RNDHU). It is now part of the Defence Medical Education & Training Agency (DMETA) and was the first tri service Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit opened in the UK.
Though a predominately naval area QARANC (Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps) nurses care for civilian and military patients alongside civilian, Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Navy (RN) nurses throughout the Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.
