The Order of the Bath was founded in 1399, and was revived by King George I in 1725. The Order is divided into a military division and a civil division, and there are three classes: Knight Grand Cross or Dame Grand Cross (G.C.B.); Knight Commander or Dame Commander (K.C.B.); and Companion (C.B.). The C.B. of the military division is only conferred upon officers of or above the rank of Commander in the Navy, or Major in the Army, who have been mentioned in despatches for services in war, and they may subsequently be advanced to the higher grades of the Order. The civil C.B. may be bestowed upon officers of the fighting Services in times of peace, and upon civilians.
