Medals Rolls Index - World War 1 Medal Records

The Medal Rolls Index (also known as 'the Medal Index Cards') is the listing of approximately 4.8 million individuals who fought in World War 1.

It was originally created to keep a single record of a soldier’s medal entitlement due to the requirements that needed to be met in order to qualify for certain medals - though nearly all soldiers who served abroad during the great war were awarded at least one medal.

Since up to 70% of the full service records sets for this period were destroyed and lost permanently in 1940, this index is very often one of the only sources to confirm a persons service.

The database also includes awards made to women in the services & details of service personnel who were 'mentioned in despatches' – official reports where a soldiers actions that were deemed notable and were then originally published in an official announcement in the London Gazette.
