THE LAST DAYS OF A TRAITOR—the 89-years-old ex-Marshal of France, Philippe Petain—are spent in dishonour behind bars in
the Pyrenean fortress-prison of Portalet. His death sentence pronounced on August 15, I94S, was com m uted two days later. His cell
is that in which he confined JGeorges Mandel, Minister of the Interior in the Reynaud Governm ent in I940 and later m urdered.
