smallest— is a Packet. Their names are Pretoria Castle, M aid o f Orleans
and Flandre— but they are not in that order. The Flandre is 600 feet long, and any one of her lifeboats is thirty feet
long; now work out the answers to the following questions. 1. Which picture is that of the Flandre1 . 2. How long
are the other ships, and which is which? Here’s one way to tackle it: with a piece of paper and a pencil, plot the
length of a lifeboat abreast the funnel into the distance funnel-top to water level; then,plot that distance into the
vessel’s length— but in the case of the Packet take a lifeboat as being about twenty-five feet.
