The Second Great War No. 72

THE RETURN T O A VILLAGE FREED BY THE RED ARMY The recapture o f Bryansk was one of the most spectacular of the Russian victories in the summer campaign of 1943. General Rokossovsky crossed the Desna about September 10, and began to outflank Bryansk. Soviet troops, under Lieut.-General Fedyminsky, made a second crossing of the Desna in another skilful outflanking movement through difficult wooded, swampy country hitherto regarded as impassable. This double envelopment forced the Germans to evacuate the city on September 17. Here is a village liberated by the Red Army in its advance on Bryansk.
