Note on German night fighter colour scheme From 1943 the standard Luftwaffe night fighter colour scheme was light blue, with a grey mottle on the upper surfaces. Such light colours might seem incongruous for aircraft engaged on night operations, but in fact this scheme was arrived at after considerable thought. Even on the darkest night there is some light. When aircraft were seen they appeared as dark shapes, silhouetted against the lighter background of the sky. Hence the light colours, designed to reduce to a minimum the colour contrast between the aircraft and its background. A similar light colour scheme was considered for R.A.F. night bombers, but the idea was rejected because aircraft illuminated in the beams of searchlights would have become even more conspicuous. <Alfred Price, 1967.
