AUTHOR'S NOTE.
The second son of a very strict father, my punishment for a boyhood
misdemeanour was the choice of joining either the Army or the Navy. I chose the
Navy, and in naming these, my memoirs, Without Regret, I leave you the reader, to
judge, and form your own opinion, as to whether it was without regret, as a young lad
of sixteen that I went off to join the Royal Navy as a boy seaman, or twenty-four
years later, as a chief petty officer, that I accepted my discharge.
