NTRODUCTION This book has been produced while memories of the second world war are still comparatively fresh. It is concerned not with anything so immense as a history of the war but with the particular war effort of avery small part of England—that part of the West Riding of Yorkshire known as Spenborough. Even so it does not pretend to be complete as regards every detail and its main purpose is to serve as a simple and permanent expression of gratitude towards those people of Spenborough who each in his or her own way rendered service to their country during a momentous period of history. It records the names of the men and women of Spenborough who served in His Majestys Forces of those who fought and those who died on the seven oceans in the towns and villages and on the beaches of many countries and in the air over several continents. 6
