On this occasion she was struck by three bombs —one burst on the flight-deck and started afire in the hangar a second smashed three boiler uptakes and put five of the six boilers out of action and the third penetrated to the fourth deck and started another fire. Although the ship was temporarily halted rapid repairs got her underway again before the second wave of torpedo-bombers arrived. V Their attacks came from four directions, and in spite of violent evasive action two torpedoes hither port side and she began to list heavily O The Yorktown's fuel tanks were torn open, and the flooding caused the 26-degree list all power was lost so it was not possible to right her by counter­ flooding. Then the order was given to abandon ship. A salvage party moves along her steeply sloping deck. After the first abandonment she continued to drift without sinking. So the following day a salvage party went back on board and she was taken in tow. But two days later a Japanese submarine which had been sent to look for her penetrated her escort screen and torpedoed her twice. This time she sank —the major US loss at Midway 900
