brav est m en in m oral courage I ever m et. . . . H e was loved by all ranks, and
his influence w as unbounded ; he was so hum an an d so s tra ig h t. H is loss to
us here is a calam ity. . . . The good he did an d his inspiring perso n ality will

T hey adm ired him also for his free and frank
m anner of intercourse, his cheerfulness, his
coolness in circum stances of greatest risk and
danger, and his bravery in leadership. T hey w ere ready to follow him an y
w here.” On recovery , he joined th e R eserve B a ttn . of his regim ent a t llip o n
on 23 A pril, 1917 ; w as drafted to th e 2 /8 th A rgyll and S u th erlan d H ighlanders
a t Norwich, and was a ttd . to th e M.G.C. a t G rantham on 24 M ay, 1918 ; re tu rn

Though he had only been a s h o rt tim e in th e b attalio n , he had already proved
himself a brave and reliable officer. Previous to his d ea th he h ad been doing
^eal good w ork w ith his m achine guns, an d h ad silenced some enem y m achine
• uns which were inflicting heavy losses on ou r in fa n try ,” an d his M a jo r: “ H is
t'.m otion to d u ty on th e day of th e a tta c k , and previously, was a fine exam ple

son very well. H e was know n as a capable N.C.O., an d d id splendid work on
