Oxford, from Cheltenham, but before taking
it up was gazetted 2nd Lieut. Koval Marines
21 Jan. 1010, direct from the College O.T.c. ;
went to France from Grantham early in Sept.,
and died at Havre 1 Dec. following, of wounds
received in action on 13 Nov. previously,
during an attack by the R .X . Division. Buried in St. Marie Cemetery. Le
Havre. The Commanding OHIccr of his Machine Oun Company w rote: " Your
son was a most clllelent, in fact the ideal, Machine (inn Ollieer. . . . He was
much liked by his brother olllccrs, inspected by his men. extraordinarily reliable,
and had special abilities which fitted him for this work. In my despatch to
the Brigadier after the action, and in reporting your son as being wounded, 1
described him as a most capable and efficient oillccr.” Unm.

Glasgow; was a Joiner; joined the K.E. (T.F.) 25 March. 1012: was called
upo n mobilization in 1014 ; served with the Mediterranean Ex|>editionary Force
at Gallipoli from 25 April, 1015; was present at the landing and evacuation of
Suvla Kay and Cape Holies; then proceeded to Egypt, and was kill'd in action
at the Second Rattle of Gaza, 2 Nov. 1017. Kuricd in tin* Sampson's Kidgc
Cemetery, Egypt. His Major wrote : “ An officer, who was wounded at the
same time, sneaks very highly of tin* plucky way lie led his section to the job,
and that he died doing his duty in a most plucky way, setting a fine example to
his men. His death was a blow, not only to the Coy., but to me personally.”

son, of Redclilfc, Kristol: joined the Glamorgan Yeomanry as a trooper on the
outbreak of war in Aug. 1014 ; obtained his commission in the same regiment
some months later, being promoted Lieut., and afterwards C apt; served with
the Egyptian Kxpeditionarv Force in Kgypt from Jan. 1010, where lie took part
in ex|H*ditions to oases on the west desert: subsequently proceeded to Palestine,
attached to the Welsh K cgt.; was slightly wounded in "the attack on Bcershcha
at the end of Oct., while in command of his company, and died in hospital at Fort
Said, 10 Nov. 1017, from wounds received in action at Shcria on the Otli. Buried
in Port Said Cemetery ; unm.

Lane there: was employed by Sir W. E. B. Priestley, M.P. for Fast Bradford,
at Ids warehouse in Bradford ; voluntarily enlisted 23 Sept. 1014 ; left. England
for Egypt Dec. 1015, and afterwards went to France March, 1010, and was killed
in action at Ncuve Chapcllc 27 July following. Buried in St. Vaast Post Military
Cemetery, Liventio (Grave No. E 15, Plot 3). The Chaplain, 10th West York
shire Kegt., wrote : " The Germans made a raid into our trenches, and though
we beat them olf with heavy losses, yet unfortunately your son was killed. I
buried him on Saturday morning in one of the military cemeteries here. . . .
He lias died a hero and given his life unselfishly.” Unni.

2nd Battn. Koval Welsh Fusiliers 5 Sept. 1800. and promoted Lieut. 10 Dec.
1808. and Capt. 31 Jan. 1000; served in Malta, Crete, Egypt, India, and in
the China Campaign (Medal), being Statf Captain at Wci-hci-Wei 14 April, 1000,
to 2 June, 1001. He succeeded his uncle in the family estates 25 Aug. 1008,
when he discarded the name of Ball. He retired from the army the same year.
On the outbreak of war. having olfercd his services to the W ar Office, lie* was
gazetted Captain in the Reserve of Ollicers, and rejoined his old regiment 7 Sept.
1014 ; promoted Temp. Major 10 July, 1015 ; went to France the same day, and
was killed in action near Givenchy the first day of the general advance, 25 Sept.
1015, while helping a wounded soldier. Buried at Festulxrt. lie served as
High Sheritr of co. Wicklow in 1013, and was J.F . for co. Wicklow ; unm.

Light Infantry) 22 Dec. 1807, promoted Lieut. 20 March, 1800; Capt.
0 Aug. 1014, and Major 3 March, 1010 ; served with the 2nd Battn (105th Foot)
in the South African War April. 1000-2 (Queen’s Medal with three clasps, and
King’s Medal with two clasps); resigned his commission soon after the termina
tion of the war, and took up farming in South Africa and the Argentine ; joined
the SjR'clal Reserve of Officers about 1012; rejoined ids regiment on the out
break of war in Aug. 1014 ; went to France in Dec.: was wounded at the end
of Jan. 1015, and invalided home ; subsequently was with the 7th Battn. at
Hull for a year, returning to France in March 1010, and was killed in action near
Ypres 22 May following. Buried in St. Jean Cemetery there. On this occasion
Major Ball-Acton had volunteered to go out with some men on patrol duty ;
on their return two were absent, and In* immediately o cred to go and look for
them, and in so doing was twice wounded, the second t ime fatally, 2nd Lieut.
Bond and Private Garnet bringing him back at great risk, thinking lie was alive.
Lieut. Bond was awarded the Military (.'ross for Ins conduct. He m. at Iron
Acton, co. Gloucester, 17 April, 1013, Isabel (Kilmacurragh, Kathdrum, co.
Wicklow), 2nd dau. of t he late Rev. W illiam Kichmond, Vicar of Rockhampton,
co. Gloucester, and had a son, Charles, b. 25 April, 1014.

there. His Commanding Officer w rote: *• 1 1 • was a splendid boy, and has
been in mv platoon for a long time, and I have always looked upon him as a-
very good soldier. He was very popular in the company, and will be missed by

Master at the Koval Academy, Inverness: joined the Special Gas Section of
the It.lv 15 July, 1 0 1 0 ; served with the Expeditionary Force in France from
the following Sept., and died of gas poisoning in No. 1 Casualty Clearing Station,
2 Dec. 1017. Buried in Faubourg d ’Amicns Cemetery, Arras. An Officer wrot> :
" He was liked by everyone who came in touch with him, an authority on every
subject and an example for the company in the way he carried out Ids duties.
Life under Army conditions he seemed to detest, but being the man he was, lie
rose superior to every difficulty and did his duty ungrudgingly and manfully.’'

Carpet and Kug Manufacturers, and on the
death of his father iu 10 12, became a partner
in the firm. On the outbreak of war in Aug.
1014, he served for several months in the
French Ambulance Brigade, being engaged In
bringing in wounded at Bruyi res in the Vosges,
and at Belfort ; was gazetted 2nd Lieut. R.F.A.
22 July, 1015; served in India from the
following S ept.: also with the Indian Expedi
tionary Force in Mesopotamia from 21 June,
1010, and died at Samarrah 11 Sept. 1017,
from enteritis contracted while on active service.

by General Maude, and was awarded the
Military Cross (London Gazette, 25 Aug.
