CHATBY MILITARY CEMETERY. CEMETERY INDEX NUMBER E. 3. CHATBY BRITISH PROTESTANT CEMETERY. CEMETERY INDEX NUMBER E. 4. CHATBY JEWISH CEMETERIES. CEMETERY INDEX NUMBER E. 5. CHATBY WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY. HATBY is the name of a district on the Eastern side of the city of Alexandria between the main road to Aboukir and the sea-shore. It contains British Coptic Greek Jewish Syrian and Armenian cemeteries. In one block are the British Protestant Cemetery the Military Cemetery and the War Memorial Cemetery and on the Northern edge of this group of burial grounds are the Jewish Cemeteries No. 2 and No. 3. At the outbreak of war the present Military and War Memorial Cemeteries formed one Garrison Cemetery administered by the C.R.E. Alexandria. Military activity was slight until April 1915 but in March 1915 the Base of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force was transferred from Mudros to Alexandria, and the city became a great Anglo-French camp and a hospital centre. The 17th, 19th 21st 78th and 87th General Hospitals No. 5 Indian Hospital and other medical units were established there. The Gallipoli campaign was followed by the operations against the Turks in Egypt and Palestine and Alexandria remained an important hospital centre and the Headquarters of a Military District but in April 19163 Hadra New Military Cemetery (now Hadra War Memorial Cemetery), about 600 yards to the South-East was opened and from that date burials at Chatby were infrequent. CEMETERY INDEX NUMBER E. 6.
