These men of the West Yorks Regiment are waiting togo into action near the St. Juuen- s Gravenstafel road on September 27,1917, but they are all smiling. For the moment they are safe, for their temporary home is a captured German pill-box, the concrete walls of which are shell-proof. Earlier in 1917 the 10th and 16th Battalions of the West Yorkshire fought in the Arras battles, while in November 1917 several battalions were inconspicuous the battle of Cambrai. The 1st Battalion was in the retreat from Mons.
