LANCASHIRE: SOUTHPORT AND WIGAN AREA. THE Registers in this group cover the part of Lancashire that lies round Chorley Southport Ormskirk and Wigan. They deal with 62 Cemeteries and Churchyards containing 530 War Graves which maybe classified as follows :—Soldiers of United Kingdom units --469 Royal Navy ------25 Royal Air Force --9 Overseas Military Forces of Canada --8 Royal Marines --6 Australian Imperial Force- 3 Merchant Navy --3 South African Expeditionary Force- 2 Canadian forces and R.A.F. - 1 Queen Alexandras Imperial Military Service. Nursing 1 Womens Royal Air Force- 1 Queen Marys Army Auxiliary Corps- 1 German interned civilian- 1 Of the British dead 193 belonged to Lancashire regiments :68 to the Kings (Liverpool Regiment) 35 to the Manchester Regiment 33 to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment 21 to the Lancashire Fusiliers 15 to the South Lancashire Regiment 13 to the East Lancashire Regiment seven to the King’s Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) and one to the Lancashire Hussars. The Registers are arranged under the names of the Boroughs and Urban and Rural Districts in which the burial grounds are situated. In the Rural Districts^ the name of the Civil Parish is added where it differs materially from that of the burial ground. The Registers record particulars of 529 War Graves.
