LANCASHIRE :BOLTON AND ROCHDALE AREA. THIS group completes the Registers of the Administrative County of Lancaster. It deals with 88 Cemeteries and Churchyards all orin near to the valley that comes down from Littleborough on the Yorkshire border, to Bolton and in those burial grounds are 995 War Graves which maybe classified as follows :—Soldiers of United Kingdom units -910 Royal Air Force -------35 Royal Navy --------22 Royal Marines -------11 Overseas Military Forces of Canada 10 Australian Imperial Force _____ 3 Queen Marys Army Auxiliary Corps- 2 Australian Flying Corps ------1 South African Expeditionary Force ----1 Of these officers and men 429 belonged to Lancashire regiments :147 to the Lancashire Fusiliers whose Depot is at Bury 99 to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment 72 to the East Lancashire Regiment 54 to the King’s (Liverpool) Regiment 27 to the Kings Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) 25 to the Manchester Regiment and five to the South Lancashire Regiment. The Lancashire Fusiliers sent twenty-two Battalions to service overseas. The Registers are arranged under the names of the Boroughs Urban Districts and Rural District in which the Cemeteries and Churchyards are situated. In the Bury Rural District the names of the Civil Parishes are added where they differ from those of the burial grounds. The Registers record particulars of 995 War Graves.
