LANCASHIRE: BURNLEY AND BLACKBURN AREA T HE Registers contained in this group cover an area on the East side of Lancashire stretching (roughly) from the Ribble South to the watershed of the Lancashire Pennines. They deal with 61 Cemeteries and Churchyards containing 885 War Graves; and these graves may be classified as follows :— Soldiers of United Kingdom units 793 Royal Navy .. .. .......................... 37 Royal Air Force 27 Overseas Military Forces of Canada 12 Royal Marines 6 Australian Imperial Force 5 Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service 1 Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve 1 Australian Flying Corps 1 New Zealand Expeditionary Force 1 Voluntary Aid Detachments 1 Of the British soldiers, 303 belonged to Lancashire regiments : 153 to the East Lancashire Regiment; 35 to the King’s (Liverpool) Regiment; 34 to the King’s Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment); 30 to the Manchester Regiment J 25 to the Lancashire Fusiliers; 14 to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment; ten to the South Lancashire Regiment; and two to the Lancashire Hussars. The East Lancashire Regiment (whose Depot is at Preston, a little West of this area), sent twelve Battalions to service overseas. The Registers are arranged under the names of the Boroughs and Urban and Rural Districts in which the Cemeteries and Churchyards are situated. In the Rural Districts, the name of the Civil Parish is added where it differs materially from that of the burial ground. The Registers record particulars of 885 War Graves.
