Memorial Register, Lancashire 146-188, WW1, Cemeteries and Churchyards in the South Western part of Lancashire excluding Liverpool

SOUTH-WEST LANCASHIRE. T HE Registers in this group cover the part of Lancashire immediately North of Liverpool and as far East (roughly) as Newton-in-Makerfield and Warrington. They do not include the Registers o f the City o f Liverpool (which were published in 1927), except those o f two burial grounds brought within the City by recent legislation. They deal with 43 Cemeteries and Churchyards, containing 1,127 War G raves; and these graves may be classified as follows : Soldiers o f United Kingdom units - 967 Royal Navy - - - - - - - - 87 Royal Air Force - ......................................................26 Overseas Military Forces o f Canada 23 Australian Imperial Force - - - - - 11 Royal Marine Light Infantry - 4 Merchant Navy - - - - - - - 3 Indian Army (British Officer) ----- 1 South African Expeditionary Force - 1 Australian War Worker ------ 1 British West Indies Regiment ----- 1 German Navy - - - - - - - j German Arm y- - 1 O f the British soldiers, 422 belonged to Lancashire regim ents; 181 to the King’s (Liverpool Regim ent); 165 to the Prince of Wales’s Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment) (whose Depot is at Warrington); 23 to the Loyal North Lancashire Regim ent; 20 to the Manchester Regim ent; 17 to the Lancashire Fusiliers; six to the K ing’s Own (Royal Lancaster Regim ent); five to the East Lancashire Regim ent; five to the Lancashire Hussars; and one to the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry. The K ing’s (Liverpool Regiment) sent twenty-five Battalions to service overseas, and the South Lancashire Regiment eleven. The Registers are arranged under the names o f the Boroughs and Urban and Rural Districts in which the Cemeteries and Churchyards are situated ; and in the Rural Districts the name of the Civil Parish is added where it differs materially from that of the burial ground. The Registers record particulars of 1,125 War Graves.
