OXFORD ROAD CEMETERY YPRES BELGIUM CEMETERY INDEX NUMBER B. 22. XFO RD ROAD was the name given to a road running behind the support trenches from a point West of the village of Wicltjc South-Eastwards to the Potijze-Zonnebeke road and Oxford Road Cemetery lies in the angle of the Oxford Road and the Potijze-Wieltje road. It is in the commune of Ypres, about two and a half miles from that town and in the Province o f West Flanders. Plot I is the original cemetery. It was used by the units fighting on this front from August 1917 to April (and in one case June) 1918 that is during the greater part of the advance known as the Battles of Yprcs 1917 and for six months afterwards. It contains 134 graves. Meanwhile another cemetery known as Oxford Road Cemetery No. 2 had been started close by in October 1917 and contained by April 1918255 graves. It is now Plot V of Oxford Road Cemetery. After the Armistice Plots II III and IV were made by concentrating the scattered graves from the battlefields East and South-East of Ypres and these plots contain 463 graves of which 292 arc those of unknown men. There are now in the cemetery the graves of 404 soldiers from the United Kingdom 74 from Canada 74 from Australia 37 from New Zealand 9 from Newfoundland 2 from Guernsey and 248 whose units arc unknown and 2 German prisoners arc buried in Plot I. In three cases a special memorial has been erected to a soldier whose individual grave in the cemetery cannot be identified. The 1 8th Hussars recorded on a wooden memorial in Plot I Row theN names of an officer and 27 non-commissioned officers and men who fell on the 13th May 1915 during the Battle of Frezenberg Ridge. Oxford Road Cemetery is informed the shape of the letter andY covers an area of 5277 square yards. It is bounded by a low stonewall and planted with thorn and lime trees. It stands on comparatively high ground. The Register records particulars of 848 British and Dominion burials.
