LEICESTERSHIRE. THE War Graves in the Administrative County of Leicester are 785 in number and they are contained in 122 Cemeteries and Churchyards. (The three Leicester Cemeteries contain 424 out of the total.) They maybe classified as follows :—Soldiers o f United Kingdom Units -656 German Army --------42 Royal Navy --------30 Royal Air Force- -------16 Overseas Military Forces of Canada ----14 Belgian Army --------9 Australian Imperial Force ------6 Royal Marine Light Infantry 5 Queen M arys Army Auxiliary Corps ----2 Indian Army (British Officer) -----j Royal Australian Navy ______ j New Zealand Expeditionary Force 1 South African Overseas Expeditionary Force --1 Australian Voluntary Aid Detachments- 1 O f the British soldiers 217 belonged to the Leicestershire Regiment and ten to the Leicestershire Yeomanry. The Leicestershire Regiment sent twelve Battalions to service overseas. The Leicestershire Yeomanry served in France and Flanders from early in 1915 to the end of hostilities. The Registers are arranged alphabetically under the names of the Boroughs and Urban and Rural Districts in which the Cemeteries and Churchyards arc situated. In the Rural Districts the name of the Civil Parish is added where it differs materially from that of the burial ground. The Registers record particulars of 734 War Graves. The 5th Northern General Hospital with 2637 beds occupied several buildings in Leicester and at North Evington. It was opened from 1914101919 about 95000 officers and men were admitted including 59 enemy prisoners and 514 o f these died in the hospital. The Leicester War Memorial an Arch of Remembrance in Victoria Park, recalls 12000 men of the City and County “who fought and died for freedom.” St. Martins Church contains a tablet in commemoration of the 59th (North Midland) Division.
