BROOKWOOD MILITARY CEMETERY CEMETERY INDEX NUMBER Surrey i. BROOK WOOD CEMETERY (The London Necropolis) is avery extensive burial ground in the Urban District of Woking in the North-West corner of the County of Surrey. It contains a number of scattered graves o f sailors, soldiers and nurses whose names will appear in another Register and on the Northern edge of it is the Military enclosure called Brookwood Military Cemetery. The Military Cemetery was set apart in 1917 by agreement between the Necropolis Company and the Secretary of State for War for the burial o f soldiers dying in the London district during the war. It was used from the beginning of that year until the official termination of the war and the sailors soldiers and nurses buried in it include 607 from the United Kingdom 352 from Australia, 310 from Canada 148 from New Zealand 147 from South Africa 15 from Newfoundland and two from British West Indies three Serbians and one Italian and seven German prisoners and one Austrian civilian. Six of the Australian soldiers were originally buried in Aldershot Military Cemetery. The Military Cemetery covers nearly four acres of ground. It lies at the foot of a short slope bounded by the London and South-Western-Railways mainline to Exeter a little West of Brookwood Station (from which it is visible). It is divided from North to South by the line of the Cross and the War Stone terminating in the Newfoundland plot (X) and from East to West by a path across which the two plots of each of the other four Dominions and the United Kingdom face each other. On the West of the British plots (VI.and XIII.) are four plots containing upwards of 400 graves of American soldiers concentrated here from all parts of the United Kingdom. The whole Cemetery lies on sandy soil on which heather and fir trees are the natural vegetation and in the Military Cemetery rhododendrons have been planted. The Register records particulars of 1581 British and Dominion burials.
