The Great War, I was there - Part 20

918 THE ALLIES PULL THEIR FULL WEIGH THere is one of the pleasant interludes in the lives of the troops just out of the front line when a tug-o*-war follows real war. The contest between British and French troops was photographed in September 1916, at the junction of the British and French armies on the Somme. The devastated battlefield can be seen in the background, while in the foreground is a small dump of empty sheD-cases. Later on in the war carefully organized sports meetings, well behind the line, agave welcome relief to the troops.
