Memorial Register, France 529-530, The War Graves of The British Empire, Hermies British Cemetery, Hermies Hill British Cemetery

TH ELAND OCCUPIED AS BRITISH WAR CEMETERIES IN FRANCE IS BY A LAW OF 29TH DECEMBER 1915 THE FREE GIFT OF THE FRENCH PEOPLE FOR THE PERPETUAL RESTING-PLACE OF THOSE WHO ARE LAID THERE. The particulars given in the Registers o f the Graves have been compiled from information furnished by the Record Offices and the next-of-kin. In all cases the relatives have been asked to furnish the personal information they wish to appear in the Register and where possible this has been given in their actual words. The number o f the Plot is indicated by a Roman numeral following the entry, the bRow y a capital letter and the Grave by a number. Thus II. B. 28., indicates Plot II BRow Grave 28. In the Registers o f Cemeteries that are not divided into Plots the Row is indicated by a capital letter following the entry and the Grave by a number. Thus D .12. indicates Row GraveD 12. Special Memorials to officers and men known or believed to be buried in the cemetery are indicated by the letters “Sp. M em .”following the entry by a capital letter shewing the group and by a number shewing die position in the group. Thus c c Sp. M em. B .2.” indicates Special Memorial Group B number 2. Other Special Memorials to officers and men whose graves have been lost are indicated by the name o f the place o f burial followed by a number: thus “Dem icourt Ger. Cem . M em .2.” indicates the second name on the Dem icourt German Cemetery Memorial Stones. Hermies Hill British Cemetery contains graves in which more than one soldier is buried and on which more than one headstone is erected. As each o f these graves has a single grave number it follows that the numbering o f a grave given in the register will in some cases not correspond with the number o f the headstone as determined by counting from the beginning o f the Row .Visitors should therefore examine die whole row if they do not at once find the grave in which they are interested.
