INTRODUCTION The purpose o f this publication is to provide a brief but comprehensive, summary o f the service that has been given by the Australian Military Forces in many countries since the outbreak o f war on September 3,1939. It does not outset the sum total o f the Australian nations contribution in lives, service and money to the cause o f the United Nations, but is concerned only with the land forces. Nor does it make due acknowledgment o f the assistance in men, material and equipment provided for the Australian Army on numerous occasions by The people o f the United Kingdom, The Royal Navy, The British Army, The Royal Air Force, The Royal Australian Navy, The Royal Australian Air Force, and The Army, Navy and Air Forces of the United States of America, without whose aid many o f the successes o f the Australian Military Forces could not have been realised, or could have been achieved only at much greater cost.
