These records, kept at TNA, contain nominal rolls and category lists for the commemorative medal issued to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on 2nd June 1953. Her Majesty was the thirty-ninth Sovereign to be crowned at Westminster Abbey.
It was announced from 10 Downing Street in April, 1953 that the Queen Elizabeth Coronation Medal would be issued as a personal souvenir to selected persons throughout the Empire and Commonwealth including members of the armed forces, various government ministers, public servants and officials, police etc.
For Jubilee and Coronation medals, the practice up until 1977 was that United Kingdom authorities decided on a total number to be produced, then allocated a proportion to each of the Commonwealth countries and Crown dependencies and possessions.
The medal was issued immediately after the Coronation on the 2nd June, 1953 and an approximate total of 138,214 medals were issued, including: 11,561 to Australians and 12,500 to Canadians.
Period covered: 1953
