This database is a transcription of The National Archives document class ADM/171/139, which comprises the complete 1914 Star Medal issue Rolls for the Royal Navy & Royal Marines. Added to the transcript are service details for a large number of men, particularly those killed in action or died of wounds during WW1 & in many cases post-war deaths & WW2 deaths are noted. The database contains the names of 12,223 Officers, N.C.O.’s & Other Ranks who qualified by service with Naval Units in France & Belgium between 5th August 1914 & midnight on 22nd/23rd November 1914. This transcript is not a “warts & all” copy of the Rolls. Great efforts have been made to correct all errors made by the original Naval Clerks, via cross-reference to other original sources. The author has corrected 961 identified errors in names &/or service numbers. In such cases this is shown in the “Notes” Column by the phrase “On Roll as...”, the corrected names &/or numbers are given in the main transcript & will thus avoid difficulty in searching for recipients with mis-spelt names. The author has also expanded on the original format of Surname & Initials only & provided full forenames for 99% of those listed. The medals covered by the Rolls are the 1914 Star & the Clasp to the 1914 Star. Each man or women’s entry is linked to display the original Medal Roll page image. The following branches of the Royal Navy & Royal Marines are listed in the Rolls:- Royal Navy Royal Naval Reserve Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Royal Naval Air Service Royal Naval Auxiliary Sick Berth Reserve Royal Marine Light Infantry Royal Marine Artillery Royal Marine Band Also to be found listed are Civilian Hospital Staff & Army Officers, all of whom were associated or attached to the Royal Naval Division in 1914.
Please be aware that due to the way we collate, and cross reference our databases, some records will contain more information than that listed above.
