Type your surname below:

Please bear in mind that the manner in which surnames are spelt have changed a great deal in the past 700 years, if you wish to search for a surname try to think of all the possible ways in which it could be spelt or misspelt! Our search results will try a few alternative spellings for you, but there may be some permutations we miss.

i.e. Smith - Smyth -Smythe -Smithe etc.

This is primarily because spelling in England was not standardised until after the invention of the printing press in the 1440s, also most people could not read or write and documents were often written in foreign languages also: Latin & French being the most common.

Information on soldiers has been taken from from the AHRC-funded 'The Soldier in Later Medieval England Online Database', www.medievalsoldier.org, 17/11/2011
