Dates: 1889 - 1922 HMS Blake was the lead ship of the Blake class of armoured cruiser, that served in the Royal Navy from 1889-1922. She was launched on November 23, 1889 at Chatham Dockyard, but not completed until February 2, 1892. After service as the flagship of the North America and West Indies Squadron from 1892 to 1895, she served in the Channel Fleet. She was later converted to a depot ship in 1907, serving through World War One as depot ship to the 11th Destroyer Flotilla of the Grand Fleet, and was finally sold for scrapping on June 9, 1922. Added on 11/05/2011The latest HMS BLAKE had its keel laid down on 17th August 1942 at the Fairfield Shipbulding & Engineering Co. on the Clyde. It was launched on 20th December 1945 by Lady Blake, wife of Vice-Admiral Sir Geoffrey Blake. In September 1947 the work of fitting out was suspended and the unfinished Blake was laid up in the Great Harbour, Greenock. In 1953, she was moved to Gareloch and a new contract was placed for her modification and completion. She was brought back to Fairfields in Govan in 1954 and contractors sea trials were carried out in October 1960. There were further modifications carried out over the years and I now believe it has or will be scrapped. Memories of HMS Blake
HMS Blake, Keil week 70 something in 2011Written by Contact this person >> "My lasting memory is the night me and "Bungy" Williams swam round to USS Dahlgren and painted our ships name on its stern. We misspelt it and it came out as "Snaky Blaky C99"" HMS Blake, in 1971Written by Eric(pusser)Hills Contact this person >> "Does anyone else remember the day we sailed out of Pompey harbour in 1971 on our way to the "States" and instead of playing Naval Marching tunes through the loudspeakers which had been placed on the upper deck, instead at full volume the rest of the Dockyard heard the song "San Francisco" by Scott Mckenzie!!" HMS Blake, Malta 1971-72 in 1971Written by Eric Hills Contact this person >> "Does anyone else remember being diverted to Malta to help in the Evacuation of British Forces late 1971? It seems at that time a certain Mister Dom Mintoff had come to power in Malta and he wanted all British Forces out of Malta, and our job was to help pack up or destroy what couldn’t be moved. We were there over Christmas and New Year on what I have now found was called Operation Exit. Look it up on the net and all you’ll read about is Bulwark which releived us!!!!." , , HMS Blake, tour of america in 1971Written by keith royden davies Contact this person >> "had an accident in accupulco mexico before going to san francisco.me and jock were in hospital in sanfrancisco .photos are when we were in gibralter for a month before we went to malta for christmas"

" I have to admit to having a very soft spot for the Landrover. I was very fortunate to ferry a diesel unit from HMS Blake (LA to Esquimalt B.C.) in 1978. Couldn’t stop without somebody wanting to trade their Jeep. It was governed but could maintain 50 mph vertically on the side of a mountain ..."

" Hi Sid I was a ’little’ 17 year old EM2 in the boiler room of HMS Blake and the Chief of the watch asked me to open the main steam valve which controlled so many thousand horsepower (20,000 or 40,000 I think). The feeling I had of starting to turn those massive screws has stayed with me since. Seeing Niagara falls for the first time (only in 1990) made me say wow. "
