HMS Ardent

Dates: 1930 - 1940

There have been numerous Ardents.
Commissioned in 1930, this A class destroyer was built by Scotts Shipbuilding, Greenock, Scotland.
Pre World War Two she served mainly in the Mediterranean as part of the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla. She was part of the patrol group off the Spanish coast during the Spanish Civil War.
In 1939 she was moved to the 18th destroyer Flotilla to carry out convoy defence and anti submarine operations in the English Channel.
In 1940 she escorted the Ajax after her battle with the Graf Spee. later in 1940 she was part of the escort group for the Narvik operations.
In June 1940 she was discovered and engaged by the German battlecrusiers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. She was sank during the engagement.
Other Ardent’s have been HMS Ardent, battlecrusier, 1913-1916, sunk at the Battle of Jutland. HMS Ardent, Type 21 Frigate, 1977 - 1982, sunk by Argentine fighters in Falkland Sound in 1982.
