"Late in 1957 one of the Valiants was in the hangar undergoing servicing when it caught fire, ending up as a long pile of ash (fuselage) with the tailplane and upper fin, pressure cabin, and both wings resting on the hangar floor. Fire appliances from all local towns and airfields attended, with a crew from USAF Alconbury taking crash-crew duties because their equipment couplings did not match British ones. "

"Does anyone remember the fire circa 1958-1959 in (I think) No4 hanger. I never did find out what or who caused it. I was walking back to my section past the hanger when it broke out. There was pandemonium and every Tom,Dick & Harry was dragging Canberras out from under the wings of the two Valiants that were parked in there one of which I am sure was on fire. Can anyone who was in the hanger tell me how it was caused. There were lots of rumors flying about, sabotage, fifth columnists and that sort of thing....WHAT REALLY HAPPENED ?? "

"My name is Richard (Rick) Stock. I was stationed at RAF Wyton from July 1960-October 1961. I was a member of the Drifting Strangers rock band, along with Paul (Kookie) Allison, Pat Kealey, Peter Ritchie et al. Does anybody out there remember me or any others from the band? "

"I was posted to Wyton in August 1955 from airframe mechanic training at Kirkham. I was posted onto Radar Recce Flt,as an airframe mech on Lincoln aircraft.Radar recce flt.also had 3 canberras on the flt which were hangered in the same hanger in which the 543 sqdn Valiant blew up.

I went on a fitters course at Kirkham in 1957 and on completion of training refurned to R,R.Flt as a J/T.I went on a Victor Makers course in readiness for the change over from Lincoln to Victors. I stayed on R.R.Flt until 1959,when i was internally posted to Station Flt,for 3 months when i was posted to ASF on promotion to Cpl and ASF was starting to do 2nd line servicing on the Victors.I stayed in ASF until May 1961 when i was posted to Khormasker."
