RAF Stanbridge

RAF Stanbridge is an RAF base situated on the outskirts of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, England. It is a satellite site of RAF Henlow and is one of the smallest RAF Stations having only two Station buildings and 24 married quarters. The base looks after the Supply Central Computer System.

It was part of a bigger site which was sold off by the MoD (Ministry of Defence) in 1999.

Prior to to 1999 RAF Stanbridge was responsible for providing Communications Support to its now closed satellite site at RAF Edelesborough.

"I WELL REMEMBER PASSING OUT AS A TELEG II AND ARRIVING AT COMCEN CENTRAL AND MY FIRST ATTENDANCE IN THAT MASSIVE ARRANGEMENT SEEING ALL THE COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT AND ALL THE PERSONNEL. I WAS NOT THERE ALL THAT LONG (BEING POSTED TO ADEN THEN BAHRAIN) BUT I WILL NEVER FORGET 1961. I BET THERE ARE A FEW MORE WHO FEEL THE SAME WAY.

I PAID A FURTHER VISIT IN 1977 (PURELY AS A GUEST) - SO SAD TO SEE MOST OF IT GONE"

"Sitting alone in PBX on night shift, spooky enough as everyone else was upstairs in commcen, but this was a cold and snowy night with the wind howling through the windows.

Around the time of the graveyard shift, (3 a.m. for those who remember), there were loud bangs on each of the windows beginning at the farthest end and getting closer and louder with each window.

Well, being the young and fearless ( and perhaps a little stupid) young WRAF that I was, I decided to face whatever was creeping up outside the windows.

I approached the window closest to me, broom handle in hand and a fearless look on my face, I drew back the curtain with confidence and aggression.

And found several of the commcen guys on the fire escape throwing snowballs at each of the windows in succession, very funny guys (although maybe not at the time)

I hasten to add there were no gash calls for those guys for a while!!!!"
