RAF Muharraq

Muharraq airfield is located adjacent to Bahrain International Airport. It is run by the United States Navy and usually ships supplies in and out of the airport with many of them from other countries as well. The U.S. Navy, the U.S. Marines, the Bahrain police force, and others run the security at the airfield.

Security there is considered one of the best in the world. With the September 11, 2001 attacks, security was beefed up with reservists of whom many had some sort of law enforcement experience while they were civilians. Many, for example, were police officers and federal agents before they were called up, which helped out tremendously. Muharraq Airfield was the last stop for most US troops headed to join the NATO forces in Afghanistan.

RAF Muharraq in 1971
Written by John Battey

"Stationed at Muharraq and had my own band called the Unpredictables. Two Army guys and 2 RAF guys one being myself. Had a residency at the Delmon hotel and as a result brought my very heavily pregnant wife to bahrain and had a flat provided at the hotel. Our first baby was the last baby born in RAF Muharraq maternity unit and she was called Tracey.

After the residency played at outside barbeques and lots of private jobs at the RAFA club in Mamama and also at the oil town of Awali.

My wife spent from March to November and went home just prior to the camp being handed back. Many happy memories of HMS Jufair and one very memorable day when a visiting frigate invited us to the ship for an afternoon where we were handed a large joint of beef and gammon which I had to get cooked in the hotel as they were too large for our oven."

" Samara, I was in the Gulf 1959 – 61, and, as far as I can recall, I saw two CSE shows during that period.  The first was a well-known comedy duo (well-known at that time); Jimmy Jewel and Ben Warris, and the other was Reg Varney, as the star of a concert party.  There were no satellites at that ..."

" This is a bit of a long shot but I wonder if anyone can help me?        I was stationed at RAF Muharraq (Commcen) in 71 and at one point we became a little overmanned. In their wisdom (?) one’s gaffers decided that I should become a courier for a while...peachy! My ..."

You may well have fallen over me in a monsoon ditch while I was being suitably ’refreshed’ on Tiger. Apparently, FR admin send all the members some free chocolate at Christmas. I’m just hanging on for that!! [Flying without wings.jpg]"
