40 ASR was formed in 1969 from 21 Engnr (Plant) Wksp. REME, which was basically a civilian workshop manned by German tradesmen. It was commanded by Major John Moore. REME which was the same building so this unit amalgamated with REME, RE, and civilian tradesmen.
