14th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare) is to provide a robust and sustainable Electronic Warfare (EW) capability in support of deployed Land Commanders, in order to enable operations in electronic battlespace.
* The unit is able to attack targets by jamming the electronic systems being used and prevent them from working properly.
* Equipment used by the Regiment must be able to support any operation anywhere in the world.
* Soldiers in the Regiment can parachute in with all their equipment or infiltrate on foot to patrol locations in close proximity of the enemy.
14th Signal Regiment was formed in 1959 from the United Kingdom Commonwealth Communications Army Network Signal Regiment, taking on the responsibility for world-wide communications on behalf of the British Army. At this time it was based in England. On 1st July 1977 it reformed at 14th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare) with the mission to provide Commander 1st British Corps with electronic warfare support. By 1978 the Regiment had settled in Celle, Germany where it remained until 1993.
With the formation of the Allied Command Europe Rapid Reaction Corps in 1992, the Regiment’s mission changed to reflect its provision of Electronic Warfare support to NATO and to the British elements under its command. Changes in the organisation of the British Army led to the Regiment moving in April 1993 to Osnabruck, Germany, with its Headquarters and two of its three field squadrons. The third field squadron, 237 Signal Squadron (Electronic Warfare) moved to Hullavington, England. In December 1995 the Germany based elements moved to Cawdor Barracks near Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, with 237 Signal Squadron (Electronic Warfare) joining them in Brawdy six months later following a tour in Bosnia.
14th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare) is the only British Army Regiment capable of conducting sustainable Electronic Warfare in support of national operations world-wide. Past operations include the conflict in the gulf, Operation Desert Storm, support to NATO and UN peacekeeping operations in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia and Kosovo, the British Rapid deployment to Kuwait and more recently support to british interests in Sierra Leone.
Despite the challenges that these major changes have brought, 14th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare) remains ready to provide modern highly capable electronic warfare resources packaged to meet the demands of either NATO or National Forces deployed world wide.
The Regiment retains the Freedom of Entry into Gloucester and the Freedom of Celle, and has been honoured with the Freedom of St Davids since 1997.
