  Dates: 1943 - 1945 HMS Empire MacAndrew was a Merchant Aircraft Carrier (MAC ship) with the Royal Navy converted from a grain ship by William Denny & Bros. Ltd of Dumbarton and commissioned on 7 July, 1943. Crew: 107. She and her 6 sister ships were Merchant ships (bulk grain carriers) built with flight decks to serve as bare minumum aircraft carriers as an emergency measure pending the availabililty of the US-built escort carriers. She operated with a civilian crew, under merchant colours, and carried her regular cargo while serving as an aircraft carrier. Her aircraft were primarily meant to attack long-range reconniassance aircraft to prevent tracking of convoys. Empire MacAndrew served in the Atlantic as a convoy escort. She returned to merchant service postwar; named Derryheen in 1947, then Cape Grafton in 1951, Patricia in 1964. She was sold for scrapping in China in October 1970.
