Commissioned as a ’Large Light Cruiser’ sister-ship of HMS Courageous 1917. Complement: 829. Re-commissioned as an Aircraft Carrier March 1930. Complement: 1,200 as aircraft carrier (including Fleet Air Arm personnel)
Sunk in June 1940 by the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau with the loss of over 1,200 lives.
Cemeteries:
A relative handful of the crew are buried at Torshavn Cemetery in the Faroe Islands, at Harstad and the Commonwealth plot at Tromso in Norway, the most northerly in the world.
