Royal Signals British Army on the Rhine

Dates: 1945 - 1994

The British Army on the Rhine (BAOR) was formed in August 1945. Originally, the main function was to control the corps districts that ran the military govenment in the British zone of occupied Germany. However, in the end it did not become responsible for administration. The main body of the Corps of Royal Signals was deployed with the BAOR until the end of the Cold War.

After the Soviet threat increased the BAOR became more responsible for the defence of Germany. It helped with the formation of NATO in 1949. From 1952, the Commander-in-Chief was responsible for NATO’s Northern Army Group in the event of war with the Soviet Union or the Warsaw Pact.

Options for Change defence cuts resulted in the BAOR being replaced by British Forces Germany in 1994.
