HMS Queen Mary

Dates: 1913 - 1916

HMS Queen Mary was a battlecruiser of the Royal Navy. She was built by Palmers Shipbuilding & Iron Co. Ltd. of Newcastle upon Tyne, and commissioned in September 1913. Complement: 1,000 (peace) 1,275 (war).

Upon commissioning, she joined the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron. On 28 August 1914, she took part in the 1st Battle of Heligoland Bight.

She was at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916 and fired about 150 13.5 in shells, putting one of SMS Derfflinger’s turrets out of commission and hitting SMS Seydlitz with 4 shots. Her forward magazine exploded, after taking fire from Seydlitz . All but 9 of her 1,266 crew were lost (2 survivors were picked up by German ships).

Her wreck was discovered in 1991 and rests partly upside-down, on sand, 60 metres down. Queen Mary is a Protected War Grave.
