Dates: 1820 - 1845
Several ships have been known as HMS Beagle, the most famous, the second to bear the name was a Cherokee class 10 gun sloop, named after the beagle breed of dog.
July 1820 she took part in the Fleet review in honour of King George IV’s coronation, and was the first ship to sail under the new London Bridge. She was not required for active service and placed on the reserve for 5 years.
She was adopted as a survey barque, and undertook three expeditions.
1826-30 The first voyage was to carry out a hydrographic study of the Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego.
1831-1836 after exensive rebuilding and refitting she proceeded to sail across the Atlantic Ocean carrying out detailed hydrographical surveys around the coast of South America, returning via the Galapagos Islands, Tahiti and Australia. She had circumnavigated the world in an expedition lasting five years as opposed to the planned two.
On Board was the soon famous naturalist Charles Darwin, on this voyage he developed the majority of his theories of evolution.
1837-43 this was a survey expedition to the Australian coast.
In 1845 Beagle was decommissioned and refitted as a static coastgaurd watch vessel and transferred to Customs and Excise.
She was broken up in 1870.
