"Jan 1957 I was looking forward to demob in april ,Not having seen my future wife, for 18 months.then the bad news came, that because of the SUEZ crisis there was no troopships available to get us home from Malaya.
All the bods from our regt and other regts were obviously feeling down.
We then got the good news that an italian liner the ISS AURALIA had been found that could get us home saling via South Africa.I,m sure all the demob lads were chuffed, I was.
We sailed across the Indian Ocean in what was semi luxury I think it was two or three bods to a cabin ,no drills or spit n polish We then got the news that the captain had decided the ships hull needed to be debarnacaled and we were to dry dock in DURBAN for two weeks. We sailed into the harbour to be greeted by a lady, white victorian dress, singing through a loud hailer It bought a lump to my throat .We were then imformed that she was known as the Lady in white.and had greeted all british troop ships in this tradition during WW 2 ,We were the first british troops to dock there since WW 2 s0 she,d carried on the tradition.
The following moninng we were allowed to disembark at 9am with instructions to be back on board by midnight To our suprise there were white south africans waiting in there cars to show us around durban, this went on for two weeks with the sameI families picking us up each day
It was my first and only contact with apartheid where benches in the parks were marked black or white.the hospitality i shall allways remember We eventualy made our way up the west african coast stopping at variouse ports to load and unload cargo.what a dream trip.
Eventualy we docked at southhampton then onto WOOLWICH Where we came back down to earth with the tradition of spit n polish and parades.not a fond memory Demobed april 57 a civie again. married the girl i,d not seen for eighteen months .married now for 52 years with a great family So glad I did my 2 years and look back with fond memories"
