HMS Quail

Dates: 1895 - 1944

Two destroyers of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Quail after the quail.

HMS Quail was a Quail-class torpedo boat destroyer laid down by Cammell Laird and Company, Limited, at Birkenhead on 28 May 1895, launched on 24 September 1895 and completed in June 1897.
She served during the Great War and was sold off after hostilities ended.
She was sold for scrap to Thomas W. Ward on 23 July 1919 and broken up at New Holland.

HMS Quail was a Q or Quilliam class destroyer laid down by R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, Limited, at Hebburn-on-Tyne on 30 September 1940, launched on 1 June [1942 and commissioned on 7 January 1943. Quail struck a mine laid by the enemy German submarine U-543 off Bari on 15 November 1943 and sank while under tow on 18 June 1944.
