HMS Hood (Pennant number 51) Battlecruiser. Complement: 1921 - 1169; 1941 - 1418.
Commissioned on 15 May 1920. Lost 24 May 1941
In the inter-war years she was the largest warship in the world. She was popularly known as the Mighty Hood. In 1931 her crew took part in the Invergordon Mutiny.
Lost in Battle of Denmark Strait with Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, which she had been pursuing. Of the 1,418 aboard, only 3 survived.
Wreck:
The wreck of Hood was discovered in 3,000 metres of water in July 2001. In 2002, the site officially became a war grave by its designation the British government as a protected place under the Protection of Military Remains Act.
Relics:
2 of Hood’s 5.5-inch (140 mm) guns, having been removed during a refit in 1934, were subsequently shipped to Ascension Island where they were installed as a shore battery in 1941. A similar mounting, involving a single gun, survives on the Faroe Islands.
Fragments of propeller, from collision with HMS Renown January 1935. Of the two known surviving pieces, one is in the keeping of The Hood Association.
