| HMS Shrapnel |
 Dates: 1940 - The South Western Hotel was taken over by the Royal Navy in August 1940 and given the name HMS Shrapnel. It was used for various naval administrative purposes, and as a transit camp for naval personnel. The hotel remained in government hands until 1953, after which it continued to be used as offices by various organisations, including the BBC and Cunard Line.
