Added on 27/08/2009The naval base, HMS Amzari, first opened at Vizagapatam during World War 2 on the 12th December 1939. Vizagapatam or Vizag is a port city on the east coast of in India. In addition to HMS Amzari, HMIS Circars for the Royal Indian Navy also came into being as a refitting and operational establishment in April 1942.It was in 1943 that the Supreme Command established this port as an advance base for Coastal Forces. Small craft belonging to the allied navies used to assemble at Vizagapatam and work up during the monsoon season with the ultimate object of proceeding to Burma around October every year. HMS Amzari was a Royal Navy Landing Craft , and Costal Forces Base. The Motor Boat Maintenance Unit No.61 was also identified at HMS Amzari in June 1945. The Motor Launch ML440 was towed by tug from Burma to Vizagapatam in January 1945 for repairs to be carried out, after damaging its propellers while making a river penetration south of Ramree Island.
