South Staffordshire Regiment

Dates: 1881 - 1959

The South Staffordshire Regiment was formed on 01 July 1881, and consisted of Regulars of the 38th Regiment of Foot raised in 1702 as Lillingstone's Regtiment, which became the 1st Battalion, and the 80th Regiment of Foot, which became the 2nd Battalion. The regiment also had a battalion of Militia (King's Own (1st Staffordshire) Militia) and Special Reserves, who made up the 3rd and 4th Battalions respectively, and three battalions of volunteers, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Volunteer Battalions. The three volunteer battalions eventually became two battalions of territorial’s, (the 5th and 6th Battalions) in 1908. Other Battalions were later added to the regiment during the two World Wars. As a whole, the regiment won Battle Honours in Egypt 1882, Kirbekan, Nile 1884-85, South Africa 1900-02 during the Second Beor War, Europe during the First World War (1914-18) and in Europe, North Africa and in Burma, during the Second World War (1939-1945).

"I hope somebody can help.My mothers uncle,who named her when she was born,died 6th August 1944.He was in the Battle of Caen we think.He was Warrant Officer Class II (C.S.M.) William Charles Stanton of the South Staffordshire Regiment Unit 2/6th Bn. Service number 2651297. We just wondered if anybody knew him,and if they did,what was he like etc,or of how he may of lost his life.We are planning a trip soon to his war grave in FONTENAY-LE-PESNEL WAR CEMETERY, TESSEL. We would be very interested to know if anyone has any information,thanks."

"I am looking for information about my Grandad "George Albert Nicholls" who was in the South Staffordshire Regiment/1st Worcestershire Regiment during the second world war. He fought in Africa (Palestine, Sudan, Libya) and was captured by Rommel in at Tubruk in June of 1942 and taken to a prison camp first in Italy and then to STALAG 4 DZ Germany until the end of the war."
