The Royal Newfoundland Regiment has origins tracing back to 1795 when Major Skinner of the Royal Engineers was ordered to raise a regiment. Since 1949, it has been a militia for Canadian forces.

The regiment was involved in the 1812 War and battles at the Great Lakes, Michigan and York (Torronto). During the First World War, it was the only Norht American unit to fight in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915. The regiment also saw action at the Somme, where virtually all members perished on the first day. July 1 has been marked as Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. After the Battle of Cambrai in 1917, the regiment were awarded with the acolade ’Royal’ by King George V.

The unit also served in the Second World War, where they saw action in Italy and Africa. Since 1992, they have been serving in Cyprus, Siera-Leome, Bosnia and Afghanistan.
