HMAS Perth

Dates: 1939 - 1942

There have been two HMAS Perth’s. the first launched in 1934 was commissioned HMS Amphion in 1936. She was aquired by the Royal Australian Navy in 1939 and was commissioned HMAS Perth, part of the Leander class light cruisers.
She served in the Meditteranean, involved in the Battle of Cape Matapan and the evacuation of Greece.
In 1942 she participitated in the Battle of the Java Sea, she was one of three surviving crusiers from the battle and was torpedoed on March 1 1942 by Japanese destroyers in the Battle of Sunda Strait.
350 crew and 3 civilians were killed, 324 crew members were taken prisoners. 109 died in captivity.
