  Dates: 1940 - 1956 “N” Class destroyer ordered from Fairfield at Govan on 15th April 1939 with another of the same Class and laid down on 26th July that year. The ship was launched on 22nd May 1940 as the 2nd RN ship to carry the name, that of Admiral Sir Charles Napier who commanded the British Fleet at the capture of the island of Bomarsund in the Baltic during the Crimean War. This name had been introduced in 1915 for a destroyer sold in 1921. She was commissioned for service in the Royal Australian Navy on 28th November 1940 and build was completed on 11th December 1940. In May 1942 the ship was adopted by the civil community of Dumbartonshire, Scotland after a successful “WARSHIP WEEK” National Savings campaign.
