Dates: 1939 - 1945
Two ships have served under the name HMCS Assiniboine, the first a River class destroyer, served in 1939-1945. She was formly HMS Kempenfelt, a Royal Navy class C destroyer.
She served in the Second World War.
1940 intercepted and capture the German merchant Hannover near Jamaica. Hannover was converted into HMS Audacity.
1941 Rescued survivors of the torpedoed British merchant Embassage.
1942 Rescued survivors of the tanker British Workman.
1942 Assigned to the North Atlantic convoy Escort Group C-1, she claimed her first victory when she defeated U-210.
After refit she was assigned to Escort Group C-3 where she was damaged by her own depth charge in March’42 after a battle with the German U-boat U-119.
She was decommissioned in 1945, and finally broken up in 1950.
The second HMCS Assiniboine a Laurent class destroyer, was commissioned in 1956 and served until she was decommissioned in 1988.
In 1989 she was used as a harbour training ship CFB Halifax until she was sold for scrap in 1995.
